10 Garden Chapel
TYPE: MODEL
2025
Garden Chapel, or ‘Chapel for the ingredient’ is a proposition for a chapel like outdoor kitchen and residency.
The assignment was given as a part of the first-year bachelor programme Interior Design at LUCA School of arts. The intention was to conceptualize a temporary (artistic) residence that included within it a specific functionality usable by the resident. The context of the assigned site, the gardens of an old repurposed furniture factory within ghent’s Brugse Poort Neighborhood, allowed for an unconstricted volume to take shape. Within the volume, a kitchen is placed which gives the volume purpose as a place where ingredients grown in the surrounding gardens can be processed and presented by a chef in residence.
During the long search for the correct volume, a division which created a light-shaft presented itself within the middle of the volume. The central dividing wall, which seperates outside- and inside-space, creates the posibility to house both a chimney for the woodfire stove and simultaniously functions as a scenographic element. As the sun changes position, the way the kitchen surface is lit by the shaft’s guided sunlight changes gradually, iluminating the work-surface more as needed.
